Calling all fitness freaks
Calling all fitness freaks Calling all fitness freaksPosted October 13, 2011, by Josie ChunAre you a fitness fanatic whose idea of a good time is a thigh-burning spin class followed by 200 ab crunches? Do you have energy and drive to spare? Are you a good motivator who enjoys working with people? By turning your passion for fitness into a career, you could work in an industry that offers great flexibility and a fantastic lifestyle. As a fitness instructor, personal trainer or fitness club manager, you can help people to achieve their fitness goals while maintaining your own fitness and health. What could be better?Australias expanding waistlineAlarming statistics show that Australia is a nation of fatties, with 67 per cent of adults overweight and almost a third obese, according to recent World Health Organization (WHO) dataWith the obesity epidemic taking a heavy toll on both individuals and the countrys health system, combating Australias growing girth has become a government prio rity. Prime Minister Julia Gillard has suggested subsidies to the overweight for gym memberships and fitness equipment, as well as tax breaks to parents to help pay for their childrens sports club memberships. These initiatives bode well for the fitness industry and anyone wishing to enter it. ABS data has shown growth in the fitness industry in recent years through an increase in health and fitness activities, and increased employment in this sector. In 2008, reports demonstrated growth in personal training, gym memberships, fitness club openings and sales of fitness programs, with increased demand leading to a shortage of health and fitness staff. If you want to help fill that shortage and be parte of the fitness movement that will transform the shape of Australia, here are some of the roles you could star-jump into.Leading the team fitness instructorsAccording to 2006 Census data, the majority of people employed in fitness centres are fitness instructors. Most gyms offer a var iety of classes, the most popular of which are fitness classes (aerobics, callisthenics, cycle and circuit), weight training, Pilates and yoga and instructors are needed to teach all of them. Other types of classes include dance, tai chi, aqua-fitness and Boot Camp (military-inspired fitness programs), and classes tailored to children, the elderly and people with special needs. Simone Martin is a die-hard fitness fanatic who loves her job as a fitness instructor. Im getting paid for something I enjoy and am able to keep myself fit and healthy at the same time. Choosing to be an instructor as a career has given me a lot of flexibility. Im able to work the hours I want to work and instruct the class styles I like. Im certainly not in a job which is the same old, same old every day. Despite the flexibility, fitness instructors need to be prepared to work at the crack of dawn, evenings and some weekends. The hardest part is the early, early mornings, especially when its cold, dark an d wet. I get up most mornings at 5.00 am, and my first class is at 5.45 or 6.00 am, says Martin. There is plenty of work in the industry if you are prepared to work hard. In addition to teaching, instructors have to spend time on class preparation, learning choreography and music preparation and thats in addition to their own training. Martin believes that people in the industry need to act as role models, being fitter and working harder than participants in order to motivate and inspire them. It takes a certain kind of person to be a fitness instructor. You will need a good level of physical fitness, good communication skills and formal qualifications to work as an instructor at most gyms. According to Martin, You need to be highly motivated, energetic, have a bright bubbly personality, be able to take criticism, work hard and put in extra hours behind the scenes and most importantly, never let participants see when you are having a bad day.Working one-on-one personal trainers A personal trainer (PT) is someone who works one-on-one with people to instruct them on the proper methods of exercising, helping them to attain their fitness goals as well as manage their weight. PTs develop tailored fitness programs for their clients, monitor their progress, change their activities to keep them challenged, and give them general lifestyle and dietary advice, as well as moral support. Personal trainers can work in health clubs, train clients at their homes or conduct sessions outdoors. PT Nardia Norman loves the variety that comes with the job. She works as a contract PT at Fitness First, running her own business within their business, as well as running a mentorship program and coaching at the Australian Institute of Fitness. Corporate fitness is a fast-growing area, with many large companies offering corporate wellness programs to help busy employees improve their health and fitness proven to increase productivity, stamina and motivation, and lower absenteeism and stress. This presents opportunities for personal trainers to go into offices to do assessments, develop programs and conduct training and seminars. A huge part of the job has nothing to do with the physical its about motivating people to push beyond their comfort zone, and supporting them when their motivation flags. As personal trainer Rose Tofalakis says, motivating people is the prime role of a personal trainer and, depending on the clients, this can be challenging at times. We all have bad days, but as a personal trainer my job is to know which buttons to push to keep people motivated. As a personal trainer, you will be your own boss so that means you will have to have some business nous and work hard to build up your clientele. You will need to be a good networker and be skilled at establishing rapport, in addition to being a skilled trainer. A good personal trainer is professional, super-organised, knowledgeable (technically and holistically), motivated and business -savvy. I am constantly upskilling, and investing time and money into learning so I can provide the best service and knowledge to my clients and other trainers, says Norman. She adds, The market is definitely getting mora competitive. With that in mind, PTs need to be smart with how they set up their business models and how they position themselves and their brand within the industry.Beyond the gym floor fitness club managersFitness club managers oversee the day-to-day operations of a fitness centre, gym or athletic club. This includes managing staff, instructors and personal trainers, maintaining budgets, rosters, equipment and facilities, managing member and customer relations, designing programs and classes, sometimes acting as a trainer or advisor, and creating and managing advertising and marketing campaigns. Like everyone who works at a health club, you will be expected to reflect the environment in which you work that means you should be in good physical shape and be a g ood representative for your club. After all, it wouldnt make sense for a health club manager to sit at their desk gorging on Krispy Kreme donuts. While some fitness club managers come from backgrounds in business or management, many come from other roles within the fitness industry and transition into management based on their experience, commitment and ability. Some managerial positions require training or fitness certifications from professional associations. All such positions require passion and initiative, as well as basic business skills and understanding of budgeting, finance and management principles.Healthy, wealthy and wiseThis may be obvious, but working in the fitness industry can be exhausting. You will have to take good care of your own health and keep up your energy with plenty of rest and constant re-fueling. Be prepared to spend money on your own physical maintenance things like massages, good shoes and good food but this is a necessary investment if you are to s tay healthy in this physically demanding career. A successful fitness worker will be a self-starter with lots of initiative, and a good networker. You may have to spend time and money on marketing yourself through things like rahmen up a website, business cards and brochures. Nardia Norman says, succeeding in this industry requires someone who is focused, determined, personable, has a good work ethic and is ego-free. You have to be patient, empathetic and well-rounded. I am also a firm believer that you have to look the part you need to use your own product as you are the biggest marketing tool that you have. You must walk the walk and talk the talk to have credibility. Be prepared for fluctuations in demand for your services. There will be seasonal fluctuations, with spring and summer being the busiest times of year and quieter times during the winter. January and February are definitely the busiest months for personal trainers as it is just after the festive season and pe ople are looking to recover after eating so much at Christmas. Towards the end of winter we also have more clients as they realise that bikini season is just around the corner, says Rose Tofalakis.Kick off your fitness careerAs a fitness professional, you will obviously be expected to be fit. You will have to be able to teach, perform exercises with your clients, and look the part. Most people in the industry have a personal passion for fitness and do their own training in their free time. While the industry is to some extent unregulated, to gain formal work at a fitness club or centre you will need formal qualifications, such as a Certificate III/ IV in Personal Training or Fitness, as well as a Senior First Aid Certificate (including resuscitation) and Personal Trainer or Fitness Trainer Liability Insurance. In Australia, PTs need to be registered with a body such as Fitness Australia to gain insurance and work as a PT. Many people also have training in specialties such as stre ngth training, weight loss, childrens fitness or nutrition because, as Norman says, in a competitive market, the more skills you have, the more you can offer to the client. You can receive training through fitness courses at university, TAFE and private training organisations. Many courses can be studied part time by distance, so you can study around work and other commitments. When it comes to choosing courses, Normans advice is to do your research. Take your time figuring out which education provider is going to suit you and your needs. Have a clear understanding of what you want to do and why, and ensure that this will fuel your motivation. Labor board rules ex-Google employees firing over gender stereotypes was legal
Labor board rules ex-Google employees firing over gender stereotypes was legalLabor board rules ex-Google employees firing over gender stereotypes was legalA federal government agency has concluded that Google did leid break labor laws for firing James Damore, the Google engineer who wrote a controversial memo about his companys diversity initiatives, according to a National Labor Relations Board memo written in January that was made public on Friday.Damore, a Google senior software engineer, was fired from Google in August after circulating an internal memo that questionedwomens biological suitability for technology jobs. Titled Googles Ideological Echo Chamber, the 10-page manifesto alleged that women are underrepresented in technology because women are more anxious and have lower stress tolerances than men.NLRB Statements about womens biological capabilities are not protected speechBefore he was fired, Damore filed a complaint with NLRB, arguing that Google was misrepresenting and shaming me in order to silence my complaints. TheNational Labor Relations Actgives employees the right to engage in concerted activities for the purpose of collective bargaining or other mutual aid or protection, including charged political speech. In an agency memo, Jayme Sophir, an attorney withNLRB, was not convinced by Damores argument and recommended dismissing his complaint, agreeing that Google was within its rights to fire him. Sophirs memo outlined that while Damores criticism of Google was protected speech, Damore had also made unprotected discriminatory statements regarding womens heightened neuroticism and mens prevalence at the top of the IQ distribution.Employers have a strong interest in promoting diversity and encouraging employees across diverse demographic groups to thrive in their workplaces, Sophirwrote. Employers must be permitted to nip in the bud the kinds of employee conduct that could lead to a hostile workplace. Damores words caused negative, disruptive co nsequences to Googles workplace. The NLRB memo said that at least two female engineering candidates for employment at Google said they were withdrawing from consideration explicitly because of Damores memo. The memo also gives us insight into what exactly Damore was told during his firing. Google has chosen not to comment specifically on Damores case, but in the NLRB memo, Sophir noted that Google emphasized Damore was being fired for what he said about women, not what believed about Googles hiring practices.I also want to be clear that this is not about you expressing yourself on political issues or having political views that are different than others at the company, Googles human resources department told Damore over the phone when he was fired, according to the NLRB. Having a different political view is absolutely fine. Advancing gender stereotypes is not.Although the memos words are not legally binding since Damore dropped his NLRB complaint before it could potentially get dismi ssed, it shows how a court could rule if Damore continues to pursue legal action. And Damore is not letting his grievance go. In January, Damore announced that he was filing a class-action suit against Google on behalf of discriminated male, politically conservative employees at the tech giant.

Running Taught Me About Overcoming Work Challenges -The Muse
Running Taught Me About Overcoming Work Challenges -The MuseRunning Taught Me About Overcoming Work Challenges Outrageous. Thats how I wouldve characterized the suggestion of running a half-marathon several years ago. I wouldve laughed it off, made excuses for why it welches impossible, and maybe even thought unkind thoughts about the person encouraging me to pursue such a challenging and time-consuming hobby.Fast-forward to the future and on February 26, 2017, I crossed the finish line of my first half-marathon. In addition to figuring out I could tackle what once seemed out of reach, I learned (or in some cases re-learned) several other compelling lessons along the way that I found applicable in other areas of my life. In fact, I used those principles to overcome several challenges at work recentlyThese wont be entirely new to everyone reading this, but they are good reminders of important principles that can get schwefelyperit when were feeling overwhelmed or scared.1. Good Rela tionships Will Push You to New HeightsFor many years I was a solitary runner, but when I discovered that a new friend was also a runner, we began logging miles together. She was the first to suggest we sign up for a half-marathon. Id never run more than seven miles, but she knew I could do it, even if I doubted my own ability. Her encouragement and unwavering belief played a huge role in my success. We all struggle with internal doubts, and there are plenty of people who will readily reinforce your doubts lest you outshine them. Those arent your people. Surrounding yourself withstrong role models, mentors, and true friendswill help you blast through your own limits. How do you tease the two apart? Pick people who will challenge you and who are genuinely thrilled when you excel. When you identify your workplace champions, make the effort to build and maintain those important relationships while managing your less supportive colleagues in a way that doesnt sabotage your time or energy. 2. Quality Guidance Is Worth the InvestmentMy friend and I didnt just start running long distances. We selected and followed a tried-and-true training guide developed by experienced and deeply knowledgeable runners. We invested in quality shoes and researched tactics specific to distance races, resulting in weekly gains in our abilities.Similarly, in your career, if you dont make the right investments, youre going to struggle to get ahead. If you want to advance, you have to look at the ways you can invest in your career. Maybe that means taking a class or even going back to school. Maybe you need to focus on building an online presence. Regardless of where you are in your career, theres always something you can learn or improve, and there are plenty of qualified people and quality tools that can help. 3. Preparations ImportantI didnt decide to run the longest distance Ive ever run on race day. I started a year in advance by talking with several runners about the preparation proces s, looking into training options, and researching different races before I took the leap and signed up for one.Similarly, in your career, its foolhardy to apply for a new position or dive into a project with little to no preparation. You might leid have the luxury of preparing for a year, or even a couple of months, but any preparation is better than none. If its a job youre after, take the time to garner support from your network and put together top-notch application materials. If youre tackling a new project, at a minimum, startwith a list of what you need to acquire and a list of what you need to do.4. Perfection Should Never Be the GoalOn the other hand, I also didnt wait until I knew I would win the race to participate. During the training process, my running partner and I both dealt with illness, injury, work and family obligations, and other unexpected disruptions that are simply part of life. We forged ahead anyway, determined to see ourcommitmentthrough. On race day, my fr iend ran despite an ongoing battle with a wicked cough. I had to stop twice in the last two miles to stretch. It wasnt a perfect race, but we crossed the finish line.If you attempt to wait until your circumstances are just so before presenting an initiative to your boss, youll only sabotage your success. Ive been in many planning meetings where someone was willing to share a half-formed idea that, through the collaborative process, developed into a great program or product. Had they kept their lips zipped until they had a fully-developed presenation, it wouldve been too late. If youre going to make a mistake, you certainly want to err on the side of being a creative, contributing team member who sometimes pitches a bad idea instead of the person who never speaks up.Sometimes a great idea can seem too far-fetched initially. An amazing job may seem out of your reach. A project may seem riddled with insurmountable challenges. Heres the truth You can do the scary things, just like thous ands of people before you. It wont always be easy or go smoothly, but you can work your way through the most daunting obstacles.Whether in your career or in your personal life, if you want to function at your very best, connect with supportive people, invest in your own development, do what you do as well as you can, and reject the mythology of perfectionism. You just might surprise yourself and do something outrageous.

How to Write a Request for Proposal or RFP
How to Write a Request for Proposal or RFPHow to Write a Request for Proposal or RFPA request for proposal, sometimes called an RFP or RFQ(request for quotation), is a document a company issueswhen it wants to buy a product andit wantsto make itsspecifications available to the public. This is usuallythe casewhen several companies will bid on the work andthe RFP invitesmora competitive prices. But, if you dont prepare the RFPcorrectly, your effortmightproduce bids that are a waste of time, or worse, no bids at all. Heres how to go about creating an RFP to ensure the best results. Difficulty Average Time Required Several days The 12 Steps Do your homeworkFigure out what youneed, what you want, and what is possible before you begin writing yourRFP.Dont issue an RFP for a machine that can produce 1,500 widgets an hour if youvenever sold more than 25 a month. Theresno point in issuing an RFP for a high-powered car when a messenger can get through traffic just as fast on a bicycle.Disti nguish between your needs and wants If you want to purchase an application that can transmit pictures between headquarters and yourvans at the job site, you might specify the number of images you need per second, the maximum size of the images you need, and the necessary resolution. While itmight be nice to have those images in color, decide if that is really necessary. If you really require a certain specific, use wordslike will, shall, and must. This indicates that ansicht are the requirements. Specifications that are merelywants should beidentified by words like may, can, and optional. Decide what the winner will look like The proposals you getin response to your RFP will differ. Each responding companywill have different strengths and weaknesses. Some will focus on lowest cost. Others will focus on best quality. And others will offera complete feature set.Decide up front what youre looking for- the lowest cost, the fastest delivery, or some combination of the two.Organize the docu ment Anything you write for business should be given a great deal of thought andshould beorganized. An outline is a good place to start. At a minimum, youllneed sectionsfor an introduction, requirements, selection criteria, timelines, and processes. Many of these sections will have subsections. Write the introduction This is where youllexplain to potential bidders why yourepublishing the RFP and what you hope to achieve by doing so. The introduction may also include a summary of the key points culled from the other sections, including the due date. The introduction of anRFP for an image transmission systemmight read something like this XYZ Company requests proposals for a highly reliable, easy-to-use system capable of transmitting images from the main office to vans anywhere in the metropolitan area. Responsive bids must be received by Monday, March 5, 2007, at 8 a.m. PST. Explain requirements This section is one of the most important and it usually takes the most time. Youll haveto specify the size and clarity of the images to be transmitted and the necessary speed. Be specific, but dont tell bidders how you want the work to be accomplished unless thats essential. You might want to break this part up into subsections. For example (a) image size and quality (b) transmission, which could include both desired speed and any requirements that make the transmissionsecure (c) desired options, where you might list the color as a desirable option. Selection criteriaHeres where you tellbiddershow youll select the winning bid.You can divulge as much or as little as you like. Itsa good idea to include a sentence like, The winning bidder, if any, will be selected solely by the judgment of XYZ Company. You might want to create a spreadsheet that awards each bid a certain range of points in each category. Then, have a teamchoosethe best bid from the ones with the top three scores.Timelines This section tells companies how quickly they must act and how long the process is expe cted totake. Be reasonable when you set your deadlines. Dont ask for proposals for complex systems then givethe bidders just a few days to respond. Allow more time to prepare a bid if yourRFP is large, if your desired purchase iscomplicated, or if you require a very detailed response. This is also where you cantellbidders how long the evaluation process will take when theyllbe notified ifthey were successful, and how soon they mustdeliver what theyve promised. Process Use this section toexplain how the process will work- from sending out the RFP to awarding the contract and when the work will begin. This section might say,Bids are due on the date specified in Step 8 above. All bids will be reviewed to make sure they meet allrequirements andare responsive. All responsive bids will be scored in X categories (you can name the categories if you wish) and the top three bids will be evaluated by the proposal team to select the winning bidder and an alternate. Negotiations with the winning bidder are expected to result in a contract award within two weeks. Decide how to send out the RFP Most RFPs are mailed out, but they dont have to be.You can send anRFP by email, or you can post it on your companys website. Just be sure to specify the name (or bid number) that bidders should use to identify theRFP theyreresponding to.Decide who will receive the RFP You may already have identifiedthe suppliers from whom youwant to purchase. Your company may even have a list of acceptable vendors. If not, you can find possible vendors through your professional network, by searching online, or by asking trusted vendors of other materials for their recommendations. Dont limit yourlist of who receives yourRFP to only large companies or established vendors. Youmight find better ideas and even better pricing from smaller vendors who are often more eager in winning your business. Notify the winner Once you completed all the steps above, its time to take the leap and notify the winning RFP that its time to move forward with the project.

Interview Questions to ask when Hiring Construction Workers
Interview Questions to ask when Hiring Construction WorkersInterview Questions to ask when Hiring Construction WorkersInterview Questions to ask when Hiring Construction Workers DeZubeSome industries, including construction and manufacturing, face the challenge of recruiting workers who lack a resume. A job application can collect basic information to help screen candidatesfor skills and experience. Yet it wont tell you how job seekers apply their skills and abilities, behave on the job, or what they accomplished in prior positions.Even when you combine word-of-mouth with a job tryout, you can end up with unexpected results. Jim Mckenzie, a Clarksville, Maryland, construction crew manager recalled how hiring an experienced roofing crewmember via a referral a few years ago went awry. The first day on the job the new guy goes up on the roof and is clearly terrified of heights, Mckenzie said. Turns out the worker hadnt lied about his experience during the vorstellungsgesprch he just negl ected to mention that hed only done shed roofs. Mckenzie helped him down off the roof, sent him home, and started looking for a replacement crewmember.Thats why when you interview without a resume, its critical to ask questions that delve into those areas. And the easiest way to dig deep is to ask behavioral interview questions.Behavioral interview questions probe how someone actually handled a task or situation in a prior job. They can help you focus on how a candidate gets a task done, how they will fit in with your company cultureor how they will tackle day to day challenges. For example, behavioral interview questions could help shed light on prior workplace conditions What is the dirtiest environment youve ever worked in? How did you cope with that challenge? To create behavioral interview questions, make a list of the ten most important job tasks, workplace challenges and personal characteristics needed to succeed in the job. The job description can be a good place to find some of those. For each item, write one behavioral or situational question and jot down a few follow-up questions you might ask to probe for mora details. Here are some behavioral interview questions to get you started with your interview preparation.Carpenter Which hand tools and power tools do you own? Which do you use best? What safety training have you done? Have you ever had a job where you traveled 100%? How did you cope with being away from home and around your co-workers so much?Project Manager Whats the biggest challenge you faced in getting workers to comply with safety rules? Whats the best deal youve ever negotiated with a vendor or subcontractor?Scheduler What caused the biggest slippage youve ever had to manage? How did you regain the slippage? Tell me about a time you changed how you worked with a team to make a project more efficient.Plumber Do you prefer to work alone or on a team? Tell me about a time when an unclear or incomplete plan led to a disagreement. How did you h andle it?Construction Laborer Have you worn safety equipment in any of your previous jobs? Do you own any safety equipment, like steel-toed boots or a hard hat? What kind of safety hazards did you encounter that wearing this equipment helped you avoid? When you dont have a resume to refer to in the interview process, tailor your interview questions to uncover a candidates real-world experience. Use the conversation to create a mental road map of responsibilities, capabilities, and the applicants fit.Asking the right questions will help give you and your new hires greater peace of mind.Learn moreHeres how Top Companies find Construction WorkersConstruction Hiring is Growing in these AreasConstruction Lets Get Hiring
